Tired but wired: Why You Feel Exhausted but Can't Sleep

You feel exhausted all day, yet when bedtime arrives, your mind seems to switch on. The house is finally quiet. The emails are done. The day's responsibilities are behind you. But instead of drifting off to sleep, your thoughts begin to race.

You replay conversations. Think about tomorrow's tasks. Remember things you forgot to do. Despite feeling tired, sleep doesn't come easily. This experience is often described as being "tired but wired."

Many people assume that if they are tired enough, they should be able to sleep. Yet in practice, it is common to feel physically exhausted while remaining mentally alert. After prolonged periods of stress, mental overload, or constant responsibility, the body can become accustomed to staying on high alert. Even when the day ends, the mind may continue operating as though there is still something that needs attention.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the term "Shen" is often translated as the mind and is closely related to our ability to relax, unwind, and rest. Sleep is understood as a time when the Shen returns to rest within the body. This process is often compared to a bird returning to rest in a tree. The body is like the tree, while the Shen is the bird seeking a place to settle.

When the tree is calm and steady, the bird can rest peacefully. But when ongoing stress, emotional strain, or excessive mental activity keep the body on high alert, it is like a tree constantly swaying in the wind. The bird remains alert and hesitant to settle, unable to fully rest. As a result, a person may feel physically exhausted while remaining mentally active, making it difficult to fully switch off at night.

If this sounds familiar, it may be worth considering whether the issue is not a lack of tiredness, but difficulty transitioning from a state of activity into a state of rest.
Traditional Chinese Medicine takes an individualised approach to sleep difficulties, considering the broader patterns that may be affecting a person's ability to unwind, rest, and recover. If you are struggling with sleep and would like support, feel free to get in touch to discuss how we may be able to help.
