What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese Herbal Medicine is one of the main therapies of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with a long history of use in China. It uses medicinal herbs that are traditionally combined into formulas according to the principles of TCM, with different herbs serving different roles within the formula.
The combination of herbs is an important part of the traditional approach to herbal prescribing. Chinese herbal medicine may be used in different forms depending on the formula, including pills, tablets and capsules.
Chinese Herbal Medicine is based on the TCM understanding that different aspects of health are closely connected. Rather than focusing on a single symptom, TCM considers the overall pattern of an individual’s health. Concepts such as Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang, together with the Zang-Fu organ system, form part of this traditional framework.
A Personalised Approach
One of the things that makes Chinese Herbal Medicine different is its individualised approach. When selecting an herbal formula, your practitioner may consider your main concerns alongside your sleep, digestion, energy, emotions, menstrual health and other aspects of daily life. These details help build a more complete picture of your health from a TCM perspective.
In TCM, herbs are traditionally selected according to the individual pattern rather than simply the name of a condition. This is why two people with similar concerns may receive different herbal formulas. Your herbal formula can also be reviewed and adjusted over time as your health and individual circumstances change.
What Can Chinese Herbal Medicine Be Used For?
People come to us for Chinese herbal medicine for many different reasons. Depending on your individual circumstances, it may be considered as part of your care for a range of health and wellbeing concerns, including digestive health, sleep concerns, fatigue and low energy, pain and musculoskeletal concerns, stress and emotional wellbeing, women’s health including menstrual and hormonal changes, seasonal health concerns, and general wellbeing.
Whether Chinese herbal medicine is appropriate will depend on your individual circumstances, health history and other healthcare treatments. We will take the time to understand what you have been experiencing and discuss your concerns with you. Where appropriate, your practitioner will explain how Chinese herbal medicine may fit into your individual care and whether it is suitable alongside any other healthcare you are receiving.
