Tui Na Massage

Release Tension, Restore Movement

What Is Tui Na Massage?

Tui Na is a traditional Chinese therapeutic massage technique and one of the practices used within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Tui Na uses a range of hands-on techniques, including pressing, kneading, rolling, rubbing and stretching, applied to selected areas of the body. Different techniques may be used according to the individual and the treatment approach.

Unlike general relaxation massage, Tui Na is traditionally based on Chinese medicine principles and may take into consideration the relationship between the body, Qi, Blood, meridians and the individual’s overall health.

Tui Na and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Tui Na forms part of the broader TCM framework. Traditionally, practitioners consider concepts such as Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang and the meridian system when assessing an individual and planning treatment.

Your practitioner may consider the location and nature of your concerns together with your health history, lifestyle and other relevant factors when deciding which Tui Na techniques and treatment areas may be appropriate. Tui Na may be used on its own or incorporated into a broader Chinese medicine treatment plan where appropriate.

How Does Tui Na Massage Work?

During a Tui Na treatment, your practitioner uses their hands, fingers and forearms to apply different manual techniques to selected areas. Techniques may include pressing, kneading, rolling, rubbing, stretching and gentle mobilisation, depending on your individual needs and the approach discussed with you.

The pressure and techniques used can vary throughout the treatment. Your practitioner will adjust the treatment according to the area being treated and how you respond.

What Does Tui Na Massage Feel Like?

Tui Na can involve different sensations depending on the techniques used and the area being treated. You may experience gentle pressure, kneading, stretching or deeper sensations in areas of muscular tension. Some techniques may feel more vigorous than a typical relaxation massage.

Everyone responds differently. If any part of the treatment feels uncomfortable, please let your practitioner know so the pressure or technique can be adjusted.

What Can Tui Na Massage Be Used For?

People may choose Tui Na as part of their therapeutic care for a range of physical and wellbeing concerns. Depending on your individual circumstances, it may be considered for:

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Back and muscular discomfort

  • Muscle and joint concerns

  • Physical tension associated with everyday activities

  • Sports and activity-related muscular tension

  • Relaxation and general wellbeing

Whether Tui Na is appropriate will depend on your individual circumstances, health history and other healthcare treatments. Your practitioner will discuss your concerns with you and consider whether Tui Na is suitable as part of your care.

Tui Na, Acupressure and Acupuncture

Tui Na and acupressure are both hands-on practices used within TCM, while acupuncture uses fine, sterile, single-use needles at selected acupuncture points.

Tui Na uses a range of manual techniques, such as pressing, kneading, rolling, rubbing and stretching, applied to selected areas of the body. Acupressure involves applying pressure with the fingers or hands to selected acupuncture points. It may be incorporated into Tui Na treatment or used as part of a broader Chinese medicine approach to care.

Acupuncture uses fine, sterile, single-use needles at selected acupuncture points.

Tui Na for Relaxation and General Wellbeing

Tui Na is provided as a professional therapeutic Chinese medicine massage service. Depending on your individual needs, treatment may also incorporate gentle techniques to encourage relaxation and support general wellbeing.

All Tui Na treatments are provided in a professional clinical setting and are focused on therapeutic care.

Is Tui Na Massage Safe?

Tui Na is generally well tolerated when performed by a suitably trained practitioner using appropriate hygiene and professional procedures. Depending on the techniques used, some people may experience temporary tenderness or sensitivity in the treated area.

Before treatment, please let your practitioner know about any relevant health conditions, pregnancy, medications or other healthcare treatments. This helps us determine whether Tui Na is appropriate for you and tailor your care accordingly.
