Nurturing the Fire Within

Moxibustion

What Is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves applying gentle warmth to selected acupuncture points or areas of the body. The warmth is produced by burning moxa, a preparation made from the dried leaves of the mugwort plant, traditionally known as Ai Ye (艾叶).

Moxa may be prepared in different forms, including moxa sticks, cones or other specially prepared products. The method used will depend on the treatment approach and your individual needs. Moxibustion has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is often used alongside acupuncture as part of an individualised approach to care.

Moxibustion and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Moxibustion is closely associated with acupuncture and forms part of the broader TCM approach. Within TCM, warmth is traditionally used to influence the flow of Qi and Blood and to support the body's balance of Yin and Yang.

Moxibustion is also traditionally associated with warming the meridians and addressing patterns that are understood in TCM as involving Cold and Dampness. These concepts belong to the TCM framework and are considered alongside your individual symptoms, health history and overall presentation when planning treatment.

How Does Moxibustion Work?

During a moxibustion treatment, your practitioner applies controlled warmth to selected acupuncture points or areas of the body. Traditionally, a lighted moxa stick is held above the skin to provide gentle, penetrating warmth. Moxa may also be used in a moxibustion device, where a moxa cake is placed inside the device and positioned over the selected area.

Your practitioner monitors the warmth throughout the treatment and adjusts the distance, temperature or duration according to your individual needs. The aim is to provide a comfortable, controlled warming sensation without excessive heat. Moxibustion may be used on its own or incorporated into an acupuncture treatment where appropriate.

What Does Moxibustion Feel Like?

Moxibustion usually produces a gentle, penetrating warmth. Many people describe the sensation as soothing and relaxing. You may notice the warmth gradually building in the treated area as the moxa is applied.

The amount of warmth can be adjusted during treatment. If the heat becomes uncomfortable, let your practitioner know so that the treatment can be adjusted immediately.

What Can Moxibustion Be Used For?

Depending on your individual circumstances, moxibustion may be considered as part of your care for a range of physical and wellbeing concerns, including:

  • Muscle tension

  • Back pain

  • Shoulder and upper limb discomfort

  • Joint pain

  • Menstrual pain

  • A tendency to feel cold

  • General wellbeing and relaxation

These are traditional areas of use and do not mean that moxibustion is appropriate for everyone or that a particular outcome can be expected. Your practitioner will consider your individual circumstances, health history and other healthcare treatments when deciding whether moxibustion is suitable as part of your care.

Moxibustion and Acupuncture

In ancient China, acupuncture and moxibustion came to be known together as “acupuncture-moxibustion” (针灸, zhēn jiǔ), a term that combines the Chinese characters for “needle” (针) and “moxibustion” (灸), reflecting the close relationship between the two practices.

Acupuncture uses fine, sterile, single-use needles at selected acupuncture points, while moxibustion uses the gentle warmth produced by moxa. The two techniques may be used together as part of an individualised Chinese medicine treatment approach, depending on the person’s needs and circumstances.

Is Moxibustion Safe?

Moxibustion should be performed by a properly trained practitioner using appropriate treatment and safety procedures.Because moxibustion involves heat, there is a risk of skin irritation or burns if excessive heat is applied or the treatment is not performed appropriately. During treatment, your practitioner will monitor the warmth and adjust the technique according to your individual sensitivity.

Before treatment, please inform your practitioner if you have reduced skin sensation, significant skin sensitivity, relevant skin conditions, difficulty communicating discomfort, are pregnant, taking medication or receiving other healthcare treatments. Your individual circumstances will be considered when determining whether moxibustion is appropriate for you.
