We are an approved WorkCover Queensland provider for acupuncture services for eligible injured workers.
Acupuncture for Work-Related Injuries
Acupuncture may be available as part of treatment for an accepted Queensland workers’ compensation claim involving a work-related injury or condition. Treatment is provided by a registered Chinese medicine practitioner in accordance with the requirements of the Queensland workers’ compensation scheme.
Please note: Under the Queensland workers’ compensation scheme, Chinese medicine practitioners are approved providers for acupuncture only. Other services such as Tui Na massage, Chinese herbal medicine, and other complementary therapies are not covered as workers’ compensation treatment under this scheme.
Who Can Access WorkCover Acupuncture?
If you have an accepted Queensland workers’ compensation claim and have been referred for acupuncture treatment, you may be able to access acupuncture under your claim. Treatment must relate to the accepted work-related injury or condition. Whether treatment is covered and whether further approval is required depends on your individual claim and insurer requirements.
How Does WorkCover Acupuncture Work?

Accepted Claim
Your workers’ compensation claim needs to have been accepted for acupuncture treatment to be covered under the scheme. If your claim is pending or has been rejected, payment arrangements for treatment are different and should be discussed with the relevant insurer.

Referral
Before treatment begins, there must be an appropriate referral from a registered medical practitioner or a current work capacity certificate, in accordance with Queensland workers’ compensation requirements.

Initial Acupuncture Treatment
For eligible accepted claims, the first five acupuncture consultations, including the initial consultation, are pre-approved, provided the injury has not previously been treated by an allied health provider.

Further Treatment
If additional acupuncture treatment is required after the first five consultations, insurer prior approval is required. A Provider Management Plan (PMP) must be submitted to the insurer before further treatment commences.
